Many people work at some sort of workbench.
In addition to building workbenches for other kinds of work, occasionally a woodworker builds a woodworking workbench for another woodworker. This is reminiscent of the way every blacksmith receives his first set of iron tongs from some previous blacksmith. (See Wikipedia: tongs).
While many forms of carpentry must be performed "on site", many carpenters have a workshop including a workbench.
