Introduction to Italian/Lesson 6
Preposition Contractions
Most prepositions are frequently combined with definite articles. Here is a chart showing combinations of prepositions and definite articles:
il | lo | la | i | gli | le | |
in | nel | nello | nella | nei | negli | nelle |
di | del | dello | della | dei | degli | delle |
a | al | allo | alla | ai | agli | alle |
su | sul | sullo | sulla | sui | sugli | sulle |
da | dal | dallo | dalla | dai | dagli | dalle |
These contractions often take on a life of their own. For example, the a contractions replace con (with) when talking about food qualities and tastes. So instead of un panino (a sandwich) con prosciutto (ham), it's un panino al prosciutto. Also, the di contractions, as we've already established, can mean some (the "plural" of un, una or un')
