TESOL/MINUS principle

The MINUS principle is a set of five points to guide ESL lessons. Following this principle increases the likelihood that the lesson will proceed smoothly and that students will learn as much as possible.

  • Meaning: relevant language
  • Interest: have a variety of activities
  • New language: keep new language to a minimum
  • Understanding: make it easy to understand
  • Stress-free: students should not be under stress
