I am noticing this odd behavior in Ubuntu 16.04 desktop. I have open-ssh installed and working. But in one odd scenario, I noticed a few things break down.

Here is a breakdown:

  • When I am already logged in, I am able to remotely SSH
  • When I am logged out, say after a reboot, I am able to get to the SSH prompt, enter my password, but as the password is going through, the network drops
  • After that happens, I need to manually open up my laptop, log in manually, then restart my network-manager (I am using WiFi - but my network is solid)

  • If I log in manually to begin with, this is a non issue.

So basically, if I am remote and need to reboot my machine, I am in a situation where the machine will not be accessible until I get back to it locally.

I am not sure which log files can give hints as to what is happening, but let me know if you have ideas

  • How did you determine that "the network drops"? for example, are you no longer able to ping the laptop at the point? Is your home directory on the laptop encrypted? – steeldriver Jul 13 '18 at 20:05

  • This sounds like an issue of how airplane mode is tied to the lid position. – David Foerster Jul 14 '18 at 11:43
  • Is the system acting as an open-ssh server attached to the network via wired or wireless connection? If it is on a wireless connection, it may be the wifi adapter going to sleep due to power management settings. –  Jul 13 '18 at 21:02
  • Well the network doesn't drop in any other way and I'm pretty sure I have any power reduction plan disabled. How can I be sure? – E.S. Jul 13 '18 at 23:45
  • @E.S. If power management is your issue, this guide may help.
