Unable to install wine => Depends: wine1.6-amd64

Question

I am trying to install wine on Ubuntu 18.4 but am completely failing. I have activated sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386 and then try to install wine, with the below output. There are too many dependencies for me to install I believe.

If I try to install via the software manager it says "Not available"

I do not have broken packages:

Thanks very much @karel. I have tried dpkg --get-selections | grep hold this is empty. Wine-stable is wine-stable: Depends: wine-stable-i386 (= 5.0.0~xenial) — Jamie Hutber, Jan 26 '20 at 00:01

@Terrance on clean VM with official repositories and Wine repository (OpenSuSe) I do not have any problems with my method. So other PPAs from your system PPAs may cause problems. — N0rbert, Jan 26 '20 at 08:24
@N0rbert I responded on the other. It appears that if you have Wine already installed that the libfaudio0-i386 from the previous does not get removed, so I had to manually remove it, then the installation worked fine. — Terrance, Jan 26 '20 at 16:52

To install wine-stable on a fresh Ubuntu 18.04.3 install -

Open Software and Updates and tick the box on the "Community-maintained free and open source software (universe)" line, then click Close and when the box pops up, click Reload
sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386
sudo apt update
sudo apt install --install-recommends wine-stable
wine --version returns wine-3.0 (Ubuntu 3.0-1ubuntu1)

Just verified this in a virtual machine

on Ubuntu 22.04 solved this issue by installing wine32 and wine64 packages
