1

I installed new nvme in my Inspiron 15 5580. The laptop boots fine with my nvme but the problem is that sometimes it stops responding (not able to read anything).

Most of the time it happens at the time of power off and everything hangs so i tried pressing ctrl + alt + prtScr + R,E,I,S,U,B. This restart the system without power down. So after restart the bootloader is not able to find my .efi file and shows this:

Finally the nvme doesn't get recognise until i completely power down my laptop and power on again.

I also checked the temperature of my drive it seems to be fine around 30-45 degree.

I think there might some issue with power supply to nvme.

  • The perfect fix as written in the answers is a BIOS update that solves this issue. If you apply pcie_aspm=force as described in the linked answer above, it will be temporary and will reset when you reboot your machine. So it is worthwhile to try and see if it helps. – Raffa Mar 28 '20 at 19:17

  • Then probably try other alternatives like updating your BIOS or upgrade to a newer version of Ubuntu that might bring newer kernels with better support for your hardware. After a lot of research this worked. The problem was because of Autonomous Power State Transition. So after adding nvme_core.default_ps_max_latency_us=5500 it works great. To do this add this in boot parameter in GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT in /etc/default/grub file

This is an ACPI issue as it appears in your dmesg | grep -i acpi and one line in particular:

[    0.136053] ACPI FADT declares the system doesn't support PCIe ASPM, so disable it

Active State Power Management or ASPM is required for power management / saving features.

One possible solution for that is to force ASPM by adding pcie_aspm=force as a kernel boot parameter in GRUB configuration.

I am having the very same issue here in a Dell Latitude 5490 with the same SSD model.

Out of the blue it just stops working.

Just to help out more noobs like me, the way of adding this line to the grub config file can be done like this:

  1. Call up a terminal (Control+Alt+T)

  2. type in sudo -H gedit /etc/default/grub

  3. Add the text to the line so that it looks like this:

    GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash nvme_core.default_ps_max_latency_us=5500"
    
  4. Save the file and close it

  5. Back in the terminal run sudo update-grub

  6. Restart the system and now the new parameter is in use.

It might do the job!
