I am rumming 20.04 having upgraded from 19.10. On boot up my Gnome-Log list the following four important warnings:

Hardware: pcieport 0000:00:1d.6: AER: [12] Timeout
Other: gkr-pam: unable to locate daemon control file
Hardware: iwlwifi 0000:02:00.0: BIOS contains WGDS but no WRDS
System: Initramfs unpacking failed: Decoding failed

Does anyone know how to fix one or all of these warnings

Edit: Result of sudo grep -i AER /var/log/syslog*

  • I have stopped the "Hardware: pcieport 0000:00:1d.6: AER: " warning by adding "pcie_aspm=off" to the line 'GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"' in the file /etc/default/grub – SteveInBavaria May 28 '20 at 19:15
  • That's not a good fix. It just masks the errors, but the errors still occur. Let's see how bad the problem is... edit your question and show me sudo gedit -i AER /var/log/syslog*... if that output is lengthy, paste it at paste.ubuntu.com. Also show me sudo lspci -nn. – heynnema May 28 '20 at 19:55
  • That first command results in "Unknown Option -i" Running the command without the option results in this warning in the terminal after closng the window: "(gedit:7871): Tepl-WARNING **: 22:56:17.375: GVfs metadata is not supported. Fallback to TeplMetadataManager. Either GVfs is not correctly installed or GVfs metadata are not supported on this platform. In the latter case, you should configure Tepl with --disable-gvfs-metadata. – SteveInBavaria May 28 '20 at 20:58
  • Oops! That's what happens when you're helping multiple people at once... gedit should be grep. Sorry. sudo grep -i AER /var/log/syslog* and sudo lspci -nn. – heynnema May 28 '20 at 21:39
  • Also please show me sudo dmidecode -s bios-version and uname -r, and tell me the make/model of your computer. – heynnema May 28 '20 at 21:43

@ heynnema I have added the result of 'sudo grep -i AER /var/log/syslog*'. My computer is a TUXEDO BC1707 Linux only laptop from https://www.tuxedocomputers.com/de/Linux-Hardware/Linux-Notebooks/Alle.tuxedo#!#1275,1325 BIOS-version is 1.07.08 uname -r gives "5.4.0-31-generic" – SteveInBavaria May 29 '20 at 06:12
  • Steve, thanks for the info, but you forgot the lspci -nn. That will help me identify what device is causing your AER errors. I went to check for an updated BIOS, but at https://www.tuxedocomputers.com they want you to log into your account there to see the downloads. Please check there for a newer BIOS, as that could also solve the problem. Report back. – heynnema May 29 '20 at 12:36
  • OK, pasted the result of lspci -nn at https://paste.ubuntu.com/p/MHKK76BPkv/ – SteveInBavaria May 29 '20 at 14:04
  • Steve, thanks again for the info. Unfortunately it wasn't specific enough, so I need to see lspci -tv and sudo lshw -C network. Thanks. – heynnema May 29 '20 at 14:36
  • Steve, to try and solve "Initramfs unpacking failed: Decoding failed", in terminal please do sudo update-initramfs -c -k $(uname -r). This will rebuild the ramdisk file that gets loaded at boot time. – heynnema May 29 '20 at 14:43

  • Funny enough, PCI device 1d.6 is actually two devices, a card reader, or an ethernet card. You don't have anything in the card reader, correct? I'll still need more info to be able to make a recommendation. Why don't you upload /var/log/syslog and /var/log/syslog.1 to paste.ubuntu.com and I'll try and slog though all of that and get back to you. – heynnema May 29 '20 at 17:38
  • Did you have time to go to the web site and check for a newer BIOS? – heynnema May 29 '20 at 17:43
  • Hi Heynnema, actually I do have a SD card in the card reader which I use for backups. I will try booting with that removed. Thanks for your help but as this particular issue isn't actually causing me any issues other than the warning I think I'll just leave it for now. – SteveInBavaria May 29 '20 at 17:45
  • Remove the card from the reader, remove pcie_aspm=off, reboot, and monitor /var/log/syslog for more AER errors. Personally, I'd go a little further, to try and finalize the cause of the error(s). You can easily check for a newer BIOS, and do the update-initramfs command. Let me know if you wish to continue at all. Cheers. – heynnema May 29 '20 at 17:49
  • Thanks again for your time, but I'm a bit pressed at the moment. I'll keep looking into things as I find the time and if I do find out what the problem is, you'll be the first to know what was causing it. – SteveInBavaria May 29 '20 at 18:02
  • Fair enough. I suspect the SD card, due to the timeouts. – heynnema May 29 '20 at 18:29
  • @heynnema Hi. I'm having same issues but with my NVIDIA dedicated GPU (in a laptop). Also when I enable it in NVIDIA X Server Settings, I seeGPU has fallen off the bus error.
