Not able to fix broken installation

Question

I am unable to install any new software on ubuntu due to a broken installation. I tried the following commands to try to fix it:

$ sudo rm /var/lib/apt/lists/lock
$ sudo rm /var/lib/dpkg/lock
$ sudo rm /var/lib/dpkg/lock-frontend
$ sudo dpkg --configure -a

In order to solve this problem:

1. Disable third party repositories in your /etc/apt/sources.list and under /etc/apt/sources.list.d/. Only keep the regular Ubuntu repositories.

2. Backup your status file:

   sudo cp /var/lib/dpkg/status /var/lib/dpkg/status.bak

Then edit your /var/lib/dpkg/status by removing the packages which cause the problem and their descriptions. (cuda-nvrtc ==> cuda-nvprof)

Then run:

sudo dpkg --configure -a
sudo apt update
sudo apt upgrade

3. To install cuda follow the official documentation.
