Unable to install pip into WSL (Ubuntu)?

Question

I have successfully setup WSL on my Windows 10. I have also successfully downloaded and installed Python3. However, I am unable to get pip. How do I get pip?

Looks like you have two separate, unrelated problems. 1) You have a networking problem. Solve that first. 2) python3-pip is in the universe pocket of the Ubuntu repositories. Looks like you don't have that pocket enabled. How to enable the Universe pocket — user535733, Dec 30 '21 at 17:04
@quantum231 And yes, to be clear, sudo apt update should work on WSL (all versions). As noted, if it isn't, there's a more general issue going on. Can you access other sites? E.g. ping stackoverflow.com? — NotTheDr01ds, Dec 30 '21 at 18:51
Yes, ping works fine. There is no VPN. This is the first time I am using WSL. I only installed in today you see. — quantum231, Dec 30 '21 at 21:29
I just tried ping command with security.ubuntu.com and archive.ubuntu.com, both work with ping but the apt-get update still does not work, I am lost. — quantum231, Dec 30 '21 at 21:32

ok what I can see is that using ping6 does not work, ping6 www.google.com fails — quantum231, Dec 31 '21 at 12:55

I had a similar issue, different error message. This should work. The benefit of this approach is that you are only installing pip for the version of python you want, whereas the normal apt command will cause it to install pip with the latest python. — dboggs95, Mar 19 '23 at 18:57

Run sudo apt-get update after that Run sudo apt install python3-pip it will install a lot of missing components... and python pip is installed.

Are you using a proxy? I had the same issue and did the following steps: Configure Proxy Settings in WSL: You need to configure WSL to use your proxy server. You can do this by setting the http_proxy and https_proxy environment variables within WSL.

Open your .bashrc file in WSL using a text editor:

vim ~/.bashrc Add the following lines at the end of the file:

export http_proxy="http://<proxy_ip>:<proxy_port>"

export https_proxy="http://<proxy_ip>:<proxy_port>" Replace <proxy_ip> and <proxy_port> with the IP address and port of your proxy server.

Save the file and exit the editor. Then, apply the changes by running:

source ~/.bashrc Update APT Configuration: You also need to configure APT to use the proxy settings. Edit the APT configuration file:

sudo vim /etc/apt/apt.conf Add the following line to the file:

Acquire::http::Proxy "http://<proxy_ip>:<proxy_port>/"; Replace <proxy_ip> and <proxy_port> with the IP address and port of your proxy server.

Save the file and exit the editor.
