I have trouble fixing my dual boot setup (Windows on the first, Kubuntu on the second drive). I had previously installed Manjaro on the second drive and the installation of Kubuntu (overwriting Manjaro) probably messed up the booting process. Now Kubuntu is installed, but unfortunately I can't boot into Kubuntu. Using the boot-repair (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Boot-Repair) tool didn't fix this issue.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Boot successfully repaired.

You can now reboot your computer. Please do not forget to make your UEFI firmware boot on the Ubuntu 20.04.4 LTS entry (sda2/efi/ubuntu/grubx64.efi file) ! If your computer reboots directly into Windows, try to change the boot order in your UEFI firmware. If your UEFI firmware does not allow to change the boot order, change the default boot entry of the Windows bootloader. For example you can boot into Windows, then type the following command in an admin command prompt: bcdedit /set {bootmgr} path \EFI\ubuntu\grubx64.efi

  • boot-repair shows a successful repair. When you say you can't boot Kubuntu, what exactly happens? Did you make Kubuntu 1st in the boot priority of your motherboard? – Nmath Mar 29 '22 at 22:15
  • I've tried booting from the boot menu (F12 on startup). There I have the following entries:
    • NVMe0: HFM256GHTNG-8510B
    • Windows Boot Manager
    • ATA HDD0: CT500MX500SSD1
    • Manjaro

Booting into option 1, 2 or 4 from that list results in a short black screen and then I am back in the boot menu. With ATA HDD0 I can boot into windows.

I also tried changing the boot order (F1 on startup) in the bios, but the only working entry seems to be ATA HDD0.

    – M1rrorshot Mar 29 '22 at 22:21
  • It looks like GRUB and Kubuntu are on nvme0n1p4 -- this is the option you should select. It will probably be labeled differently by your motherboard. If you aren't sure, then try them all. – Nmath Mar 29 '22 at 22:26
  • So I've tried every option from the boot menu and changed the boot order accordingly, but the only entry I can boot from is ATA HDD0.

Also the path of my windows bootmanager is \efi\manjaro\grubx64.efi. That really doesn't seem right to me since there is no Manjaro any more. I tried changing it, but after rebooting the path is changed back to \efi\manjaro\grubx64.efi.

    – M1rrorshot Mar 29 '22 at 22:40
  • Windows Boot Manager shouldn't be in a Manjaro folder under EFI. Any idea how it got there? Was Manjaro installed before Windows? Did you remove Manjaro before installing Ubuntu or did you install Ubuntu overwriting Manjaro? If so, you may have created a "Frankenstein" OS. Perhaps you should delete the partition with Kubuntu/Manjaro. Make sure Windows is still bootable, then install Ubuntu to the unpartitioned free space using the "Install Alongside Windows" option. Make sure you boot the Ubuntu USB as UEFI if Windows is a UEFI installation – Nmath Mar 29 '22 at 22:52
  • I am not really sure how it got there. Windows was installed first. After that I installed Manjaro on the second drive. Then I installed Kubuntu overwriting Manjaro. Thanks for the advice, I am going to try that. – M1rrorshot Mar 30 '22 at 06:53
  • Okay, I finally solved it. In the UEFI I had the option "Lock Boot Order" enabled. Because of this I was unable to change the path of the Windows Boot Manager. After disabling the "Lock Boot Order" option I restored the default path of the Windows Boot Manager and used the tool EasyUEFI to create a new uefi entry for Kubuntu set to \efi\ubuntu\grubx64.efi. Then I put this new entry at the top of the boot order list. Now I can choose Windows or Kubuntu in Grub. – M1rrorshot Mar 30 '22 at 08:59
