I am a relatively new user and I am trying to troubleshoot my Everspace install. After about 30 minutes of play, Everspace crashes. My dmesg log reads as follows:

My initial research said that systemd-oomd is that culprit, so I killed it:

sudo systemctl status systemd-oomd
○ systemd-oomd.service
Loaded: masked (Reason: Unit systemd-oomd.service is masked.)
     Active: inactive (dead)

Any help would be greatly appreciated, and I will be sure to post back should I discover the culprit. My current theory is that I really am running out of memory, thus why it dies. When it crashes, it takes GNOME with it, forcing the UI to restart and I have to log back in. I keep turning my graphical options down and it doesn't seem to help. I am now out of my league.

Thank you so much for your time!

Either it's a memory management bug in your program, or you need swap space.

One uses swap space to control what happens when programs allocate all the real memory, and want more. After all releasable cache (some cached blocks are "in use", and cannot be freed) has been released, the system enters the Out-Of-Memory state. In the Out-Of-Memory condition, with swap, some task's memory is written to disk, freed for reuse, and later returned to memory (swapped in) when the task runs. Without swap, the system may freeze, the dreaded OOM-Killer (a pseudo process, hard-coded in the kernel) runs, and picks a process to KILL, in order to free memory. The OOM-Killer is known for inconvenient choices.

System hibernation requires a RAM-sized, contiguous swap area.

Read man mkswap fallocate filefrag swapon fstab.

If adding swap space simply delays the onset of the problem, it's a bug. Report it to the game developers.

Okay, so I followed the advice and researched the links and man pages provided. I found this lovely program called Swapspace that creates dynamic swap files. A part of my set up that I didn't mention is that I'm dual booting, so I have all this HDD space just hanging out over on my Windows side. So I installed swapspace with: sudo apt install swapspace , mounted the drive, and ran sudo swapspace -s /media/geary/Acer

Tada! No more crashes and the performance is great. Onequick note to anyone using this in the future: I am using this on a SDD, which is a big no no because SDD's don't have quite as many read-writes as a traditional platter drive. Since I only have one HDD, I'm putting this poor thing through a lot just to play a game. I'm aware of this and I'm fine with it, but anyone else should way this decision for themselves. I'll have to teach myself how to set this up to run all the time next, but this issue is solved.
