I recently installed KDE in to my Ubuntu 10.04 machine using apt. (i.e apt-get install kde-desktop)

After a while I got enough with the testing and wanted to have gnome again. So I removed all the kde4 components on my system using Synaptic package manager and everything that is associated with the KDE desktop environment was deleted. (or so that's what I thought..)

But after all that and a restart, the loading screen (or the splash screen) still shows 'Kubuntu'. and also when I'm using gnome, apart from the legal (gnome) mouse pointer I should see, I see the KDE mouse pointer. (The oxygen theme one)

What was wrong with the way I removed KDE and why I get to see remnants of a deleted desktop environment.

  • Yes, I guess..the only difference is I did that using the Synaptic GUI. – Dananjaya Dec 13 '10 at 13:46
  • The existence of above link indicates, that the process of removing desktop environments is not yet as good as it should be. When doing such huge installations, I always do it on the command line and copy and save apt-get's output on what's about to change. That makes it pretty easy to completely get rid of all package at a later time (however, you might still see some leftover user data, though). – htorque Dec 13 '10 at 14:08

Two suggestions

  1. Check psychocats puregnome not sure if he's the one who maintains the wiki but obviously check the package list to make sure you really want to remove those packages before removing them.

  2. Open /var/log/apt/history.log in gedit and check for the installation of kde-desktop all of the packages installed at the same time or within a few seconds/minutes will be the packages added as dependancies of kde-desktop make a list check it twice..... (hey it's December) and then remove those packages.

Hope either of these options helps you out.

Since I already have gnome, I didnt added the && install ubuntu-desktop part. Also since some of the kde4 packages were already deleted, only the packages listed down were the candidates for the removal.

The only issue here is that I lost VLC player, GIMP and some other programs which I didn't installed along with kde4 or isn't a dependency of it. And most of all, the original problem still persists. :-( Installing the lost programs isn't a problem since no irrecoverable data were lost, but I still have a hard time understanding whats wrong with the process..

UPDATE I was bit impatient earlier..It does fix things after a restart...so all I got to do now is to download and install VLC, GIMP and other lost programs..
