Apt-get failed to update on 12.10

Question

When running a software update, I got a message telling me that either my network connections aren't working anymore, or that Failed to download repository information. I already tried restarting my computer and running the software updater from the terminal. I am running Xubuntu 12.10.

Xubuntu 12.10 is no longer supported, it hit End-of-Life. The deprecated packages are taken down after 12 months, so it seems time has come.

To make apt-get update work, you simply need to edit /etc/apt/sources.list and update all URLs from security.ubuntu.com and archive.ubuntu.com to point to old-releases.ubuntu.com, as per the following sed command:

sudo sed -i.bak -r 's/(archive|security).ubuntu.com/old-releases.ubuntu.com/g' /etc/apt/sources.list

If you want to upgrade your system you can use following commands:

sudo apt-get install update-manager-core && do-release-upgrade

I would recommend sudo apt-get install update-manager-core && do-release-upgrade so the second command is only performed if the first one works. – LittleByBlue Jan 16 '15 at 12:52
the first one did not work so i did the second one and it did updated but still do not work now it says: Package dependencies cannot be resolved
This error could be caused by required additional software packages which are missing or not installable. Furthermore there could be a conflict between software packages which are not allowed to be installed at the same time.

The script didn't work for me, cause in my case the address was "us.archive.ubuntu.com" instead of "archive.ubuntu.com". But manually replacing all the sources with "old-releases.ubuntu.com" saved my Vagrant + Puppet Box! :) – Kamafeather Apr 15 '15 at 09:17
