This is a Ubuntu 15.10 installation running gnome.
If I logoff, it lands me at the command line, and I get the message: "A start job is running for Wait for Plymouth boot screen to quit (42s/No limit)".
The only option at that point is to switch to another tty, login as root and reboot. Edit: It appears I can also switch to another tty and run 'startx' to get back X. However the previous tty appears hung up forever.
I have not modified any system settings recently, and have not meddled with init. Tell me what logs can help me get to the bottom of this.

It does not show any process associated with tty7 (the hung one)
If I run agetty from another tty, I can get tty7 to hand me the login shell:
agetty -s 38400 -t 600 tty7 linux
But I am not close to discovering why I cant logout.
