I have an AOC e2727she monitor that I wanted to use with my Dell Inspiron laptop running Ubuntu 16.04. I plug it into my laptop using an HDMI to HDMI cable. When I plug it in, thought,the highest resolution available is 1024x768 at 60.00 Hz. I followed the directions here to create a custom modeline for my monitor.

One of the things I noticed here is that Ubuntu thinks that my HDMI port is a DisplayPort, but I don't know if that's important.

Another important thing is, I can connect to the monitor with my Windows 10 laptop, and I can correctly resize the screen to 1920x1080.

I ran cvt and got this

-[zephyr@mimir3]-[~ 130] - 09:30 AM
-> cvt 1920 1080 60
# 1920x1080 59.96 Hz (CVT 2.07M9) hsync: 67.16 kHz; pclk: 173.00 MHz
Modeline "1920x1080_60.00"  173.00  1920 2048 2248 2576  1080 1083 1088 1120 -hsync +vsync

I then incorporated this into xrandr

xrandr --newmode "1920x1080_60.00"  173.00  1920 2048 2248 2576  1080 1083 1088 1120 -hsync +vsync
xrandr --addmode DisplayPort-0 1920x1080_60.00
xrandr --output DisplayPort-0 --mode 1920x1080_60.00

I looked over at my other screen and it seemed to have worked, but when I moved a browser window over to it, all of the text and icons got messed up and blurry. I can't really read off of it.

I'm at kind of a loss at what to do next.

EDIT: I took a DVI cable that I was using with my main computer, and plugged it into a DVI to Mini Displayport adapter, and plugged that into my Dell. This did manage to work. Ubuntu came up with the display automatically and it was the correct name, unlike previously with the HDMI adapter. Maybe something is wrong with the HDMI port on the monitor? I won't mark this as answered as it doesn't explain what is happening with regards to the HDMI port.

  • Could you [edit] the question and add the output of sudo lshw -c display; xrandr --verbose ? – user.dz Jun 16 '16 at 20:34
  • @Sneetsher question updated – zephyrthenoble Jun 27 '16 at 13:57
  • The graphic card didn't receive EDID data on DisplayPort-0, Either: you are using a plug adapter, bad cable, bad contact, or even the screen doesn't send it . Could you [edit] the question and add info what's the brand/model of monitor? how is it connected, is it HDMI-HDMI cable? (shorter the better) – user.dz Jun 27 '16 at 14:34
  • @Sneetsher as I mentioned at the beginning of the question, the monitor is an AOC e2727she. Also note my edit about connecting with Windows. – zephyrthenoble Jun 28 '16 at 19:40
