Chromium launches to a black screen. Also sudo apt-get update returns errors

Question

Just some background: this is the latest Ubuntu being run on virtual-box. Also, I just started using using Linux this week, so I'm a total noob. Now, these might not be connected, but for the second part of the question, I get this when I type sudo apt-get update into the terminal:

Now that's seemingly not affecting my computer or anything, except when I installed chromium and try to launch it through the terminal, it's basically a messed up black window and the terminal vomits out this code:

Then it keeps spitting out that last line. Here's a picture of what chromium looks like on launch:

To confirm that this is not an isolated problem. I have the same with both Chromium and Google Chrome. In addition, the latest version of Atom has display issues as well. (Latest versions of browsers, Virtualbox 5.0.22) — HectorMalot, Jul 02 '16 at 00:01

My workaround has been to disable 3D acceleration in VirtualBox, which seems to be the culprit for this problem. I hope a fix will come out on the VirtualBox side soon.

Some people have had success running chromium without GPU acceleration using the following steps, although this didn't solve my problems (especially for Atom):

Via shell, "locate google-chrome.desktop"
Edit file located in #1 to add "--disable-gpu" to the end of each Exec statement found
Save and close
Launch Chrome through the Launcher icon
Enjoy actually being able to see Chrome render stuff
