I want to upgrade to 16.4 LTS and get the following message:

enter image description here

What can I do?

I am wondering if I have enough space. It's a netbook with 2GB RAM and 16GB SSD. The processor is Intel® Atom™ CPU N270 @ 1.60GHz × 2.

I might have unofficial software but how do I know? How can I then remove them?

Please [edit] your question and add the outputs of the terminal commands lsb_release -a, sudo apt-get update, sudo apt-get upgrade. – Byte Commander Aug 06 '16 at 16:02

It appears that you have problems with several repositories you have added somewhere along the way. Specifically, at least the opera and google chrome repos (maybe more). You could try removing these repos and trying a sudo apt-get update. If you don't get errors, you should be able to proceed. – Organic Marble Aug 06 '16 at 16:35
  • How do I proceed to remove the repos? – Larry Golade Aug 06 '16 at 16:40

open the software and updates from setting menu , there you can find the ppa's in Software Sources tab , you can also remove ppa's by removing the .list files from /etc/apt/sources.list.d directory. – hellozee Aug 06 '16 at 16:58
  • Sorry I am not particularly advanced. I posted a screenshot of sofware and updates in my my last edit. Can I remove from there and which ones should I remove and what are the implications of removing repositories? – Larry Golade Aug 06 '16 at 17:03

I would suggest removing all 3rd party repos. In other words, on the screen you posted uncheck all the boxes after the first one. The upgrader would eventually do that anyway. The implication is that the apps installed from those repos will not receive updates in the future. But if their repos exist in the upgraded system, you can go back in and enable them. – Organic Marble Aug 06 '16 at 17:06
  • I have unchecked all except the 2 as seen on the screenshot I just posted in my edit. However the remove box is not active any more. Should I just try upgrading now? – Larry Golade Aug 06 '16 at 17:55

in a terminal issue the command sudo apt-get update and enter your password when prompted. If you don't get any errors, you can try upgrading. – Organic Marble Aug 06 '16 at 17:57
  • I did this, I did not see any errors, I tried to upgrade but I got the same error message as at the beginning of my post. I edited the output of "sudo apt-get update". – Larry Golade Aug 06 '16 at 18:49
  • You got the same error message? Including this one? Failed to fetch http://dl.google.com/linux/chrome/deb/dists/stable/Release Unable to find expected entry 'main/binary-i386/Packages' in Release file (Wrong sources.list entry or malformed file) – Organic Marble Aug 06 '16 at 19:30
  • No, I meant that I entered "sudo apt-get update", could not see any error, tried to upgrade again and got again the following unresolvable error message: http://i.stack.imgur.com/YMQl4.jpg – Larry Golade Aug 06 '16 at 19:53
  • Consider trying the upgrade in a terminal by typing sudo do-release-upgrade that should at least show you the error messages. – Organic Marble Aug 06 '16 at 20:10
  • I did sudo do-release-upgrade and wanted to post the output but my post size is limited to 30000 characters. Where can I post the output to get a new diagnostic? – Larry Golade Aug 06 '16 at 20:46
