I'm trying to resize a partition on the flash drive I'm running Ubuntu on as per the instructions in this guide: https://www.pendrivelinux.com/create-a-larger-than-4gb-casper-partition/#more-4047. My goal is to have a larger casper-rw partition than 4GB.

However, when I try to do the first resize operation mentioned in the guide, GParted is giving me the following error:

GParted 0.11.0 --enable-libparted-dmraid

I don't know anything about GParted. However, I don't think the USB is the problem as I just bought it, and chkdisk on Windows didn't reveal any problems. Any ideas how to fix this error? Here is output of df:

  • Why would you be trying to shrink 28.91 GiB to 1.09 GiB? – heynnema Jan 04 '17 at 23:18
  • I'm following the guide mentioned in my post. I want to shrink it down to 1.09 GiB, then use the freed space for a casper-rw partition. – Adam Jan 04 '17 at 23:19
  • How big is the pendrive? – heynnema Jan 04 '17 at 23:22
  • It's 32 GB, just bought it yesterday – Adam Jan 04 '17 at 23:24
  • So how are you planning on making this bootable if you resize the only existing partition down to 1GiB? – heynnema Jan 04 '17 at 23:25
  • It's already bootable. The remaining 1 GiB is for Ubuntu – Adam Jan 04 '17 at 23:25

A bootable Ubuntu can't exist in 1GiB. Or am I missing what you're trying to do? – heynnema Jan 04 '17 at 23:29
  • I'm following this guide: https://www.pendrivelinux.com/create-a-larger-than-4gb-casper-partition/#more-4047. I've already run their tool to create a bootable USB, I think that step is what is using the 1 GiB. What I want to do now is create a casper-rw partition so I can have persistent storage when I run Ubuntu off the USB. – Adam Jan 04 '17 at 23:31
  • Those instructions just don't look right. You're trying to reduce a 29G partition down to 1.09G and there's already 1.1G used in that partition. If you resize to 2G it might work. – heynnema Jan 04 '17 at 23:35
  • Those instructions are old and the screenshots even older. It works if you don't ask for impossible situations like shrinking a partition to a size less than the contents already there. And you probably don't need persistence anyway. If you intend to have a portable Ubuntu you would be better doing a normal installation (from another flash drive or DVD) in the 32GB flash drive, plenty of space there. –  Jan 05 '17 at 02:33
