For some weeks my ubuntu 14.04 server reboots unexpectedly and I can't find the reason. I investigated into the log files (syslog, kern.log) and the last entry before restart is always just this weird stuff here

How can I track down this issue? I don't find any reason, process or something else which is causing the reboot. Are there tools which can help me?

  • This could be caused by a Hardware issue. How often are the reboots? – GTRONICK Mar 22 '17 at 21:18
  • Fortunately not that often so far. 03/09, yesterday und today in the morining and 1 hour ago. I'll check the CPU workload for that times. Maybe the CPU gets to warm when server is on max load – Lean-Juc Dicarp Mar 22 '17 at 21:24

    Those characters are representation of zeros. It seems that the log data was not written back when the system crashed and you just have zero blocks instead of data in the logs. – Colin Ian King Mar 22 '17 at 21:25

  • Thanks, I will check this monitoring tools out. My server host is offering a "hardware test" but it's said that the server won't be available for 3-6 hours, not good for my production system... ;). – Lean-Juc Dicarp Mar 22 '17 at 21:33
