I have to upgrade Ubuntu server 10.04 to 12.04.

10.04 is not supported any more. So what step I have to do, for a clean upgrade?

I did the following steps:

sudo sed -i -re 's/([a-z]{2}\.)?archive.ubuntu.com|security.ubuntu.com/old-r‌eleases.ubuntu.com/g‌' /etc/apt/sources.list
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
sudo apt-get update
sudo do-release-upgrade

After some time, the upgrade is aborting: ...Restoring original system state

root@vupapzimbra01:~# sudo apt-get install update-manager-core

update-manager-core is already the newest version.
The following packages were automatically installed and are no longer required:
  linux-headers-2.6.32-41-server linux-headers-2.6.32-41
Use 'apt-get autoremove' to remove them.
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.

  • why do you want to upgrade to 12.04 instead of 16.04 for example? – Yaron May 04 '17 at 06:59
  • Its also possible to upgrade to 16.04. But my problem is the upgrade from 10.04. I get no patches.... thanks – Johannes Templ May 04 '17 at 07:05
  • @Yaron It is the preferred way to upgrade to the nearest LTS and then possibly again. – Melebius May 04 '17 at 07:16
  • I did the following steps now: – Johannes Templ May 04 '17 at 07:23
  • sudo sed -i -re 's/([a-z]{2}.)?archive.ubuntu.com|security.ubuntu.com/old-releases.ubuntu.com/g' /etc/apt/sources.list sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade sudo apt-get update sudo do-release-upgrade

    After some time, the upgrade is aborting: ...Restoring original system state thanks for your help Hannes

  • Did you execute sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install update-manager-core sudo do-release-upgrade ? – Yaron May 04 '17 at 07:32
  • @Melebius I have updated the question! – Johannes Templ May 04 '17 at 08:04
  • In your question (and in answers), if you indent four spaces, the line is rendered as code , and it will be easier to read. – sudodus May 04 '17 at 08:11
