I've not managed to get my wifi working for longer than 30 seconds. I work on a brand new, cleanly installed Asus X542UA with Ubuntu 16.04 I tried the following sollutions, but none worked:
Sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade
These two: Qualcomm Atheros Device [168c:0042] (rev 30) Wi-Fi driver installation

Anyone a solution? BTW I tried a distro update to 17.04 but besides it didn't fix my wifi it also gave massive errors on keyboard and mouspad, so did a clean install 16.04
My live-usb was not showing wifi. While installing ubuntu, I selected download and install updates, 3rd party softwares, etc. The installed version shows wifi. Its kernel is different than the live-usb. This post says its fixed after version 4.13
