ext4 (fourth extended filesystem) is a backward compatible journaling file system for Linux, developed as a direct successor to ext3.
ext4 has a number of improved features over ext3, such as:

- Delayed and multi-block allocation

- Transparent encryption
- Maximum 16 Terabyte file size
