I'm old enough to predate the personal computer; my first experience using a computer was in the mid 1970's, and we only had a printer/keyboard for realtime data entry, and punch cards for batch jobs. I learned to program in BASIC and assembly language before I could drive, then later Fortran, Pascal, more asssembly language, and C.
I did a 17 year tour of duty at Genentech, Inc, where I wore many hats, too many to name here. I ended my career there when I became totally paralyzed by a rare disease called GBS. This hasn't stopped me from being the leader of a nonprofit that provides technology to the disabled. We are the creators of an Ubuntu remix that is pitched at meeting the needs of disabled people. By using Ubuntu as our corre OS, we are able to provide highly usable laptops that run entirely free open sourced software, even on older devices. Since most disabled people are also unemployed, this is a real need because other computer solutions (Windows or Apple) cost money just to keep them running. I alo help run a server that provides Web, Email and other services to nonprofits and disabled users. Yes, its an Ububtu based machine.
In my spare time, I am an avid bird watcher, an amateur astronomer, a SciFi enthusiast, and a hacker of small devices like the raspberry Pi, BeagleBone Black, Nook Color, Nexus 7, and all kinds of other tablets and phones.
