Latin II/In the city Lesson 2

Salvēte omnēs! Welcome back to Latin for Wikiversity. Last time we learned about public buildings. Today we'll learn about shops and private buildings in a Roman city.

New Grammar

To describe what kind of shop something is, Latin often uses a genitive:

  • taberna librāria = bookshop (literally "shop of books")
  • taberna vīnāria = wine shop

We can also use the suffix -ārius/a to describe shop types or shopkeepers:

  • librārius = bookseller
  • vīnārius = wine merchant
