I just upgraded to 16.04 from 14.04 LTS, and suddenly Eclipse won't start. Here's the Eclipse log file:

Anyone else encountered this?

Edit: upgrading to Eclipse 4.2 gives this error:

There seems to be a bunch of missing dependencies:

Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM warning: You have loaded library /opt/eclipse/plugins/org.eclipse.equinox.launcher.gtk.linux.x86_1.1.200.v20120913-144807/eclipse_1502.so which might have disabled stack guard. The VM will try to fix the stack guard now.
It's highly recommended that you fix the library with 'execstack -c <libfile>', or link it with '-z noexecstack'.
Gtk-Message: Failed to load module "overlay-scrollbar"
Gtk-Message: Failed to load module "unity-gtk-module"

(Eclipse:17614): Gtk-WARNING **: Unable to locate theme engine in module_path: "murrine",

I ran

sudo apt-get install unity-gtk-module-common:i386

but get this message:

Note, selecting 'unity-gtk-module-common' instead of 'unity-gtk-module-common:i386'
unity-gtk-module-common is already the newest version (0.0.0+15.04.20150118-0ubuntu2).
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 1 not upgraded.

Trying to install overlay-scrollbar just says it's already the latest. Trying overlay-scrollbar:i386 gives this message:

Package overlay-scrollbar:i386 is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source

I also tried downgrading Java to 1.7 using sudo update-java-alternatives, which also doesn't remove the initial error

  • After upgrade Java is 1.8 but do your eclipse upgraded and compatible with Java 1.8 ? Please check that. Which version of eclipse you use and java version by default system shows ? – SAGAR Nair Aug 28 '16 at 11:02
  • java -version gives openjdk version "1.8.0_91" OpenJDK Runtime Environment (build 1.8.0_91-8u91-b14-3ubuntu1~16.04.1-b14) OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM (build 25.91-b14, mixed mode) I'm using eclipse 3.8 – samgak Aug 28 '16 at 11:23

Yes. Thats it. Eclipse 3.8 doesn't seems to work with java 8. So you need to install eclipse 4.2 (Luna) if you need to use Java 8. And I prefer to use Oracle Java rather than open jdk. Go ahead with the eclipse 4.2 and oracle java 8.

  • Thanks for your suggestion. I tried upgrading Eclipse and downgrading Java and neither solved it however. – samgak Aug 28 '16 at 12:43
  • Don't downgrade java. If u are using 64 bit OS , use oracle jdk 8 64 bit and eclipse 4.2 64 bit if not if ur os is 32 bit then everything could be 32 bit. – SAGAR Nair Aug 28 '16 at 13:57
  • My OS is 32-bit. Tried installing eclipse 4.2 but a whole bunch of dependencies are missing. – samgak Aug 28 '16 at 23:15
  • post output or screenshot . – SAGAR Nair Aug 29 '16 at 05:17
  • I've posted screenshot and output. I don't understand why packages would be missing, as I told it not to remove any packages when I did the ubuntu upgrade – samgak Aug 29 '16 at 06:54
  • Your answers seems to be wrong. You said your OS is 32 bit but your java version op shows its installed 64 bit that could be no way possible. – SAGAR Nair Aug 29 '16 at 11:00
  • post the op of the following uname -a; lsb_release -a; java --version; – SAGAR Nair Aug 29 '16 at 11:03
  • You're right, it's a 64-bit OS, I was confused with another machine I was upgrading at the same time. Still, I didn't actually select 32-bit any time during the upgrade. – samgak Aug 29 '16 at 11:15

  • Ended up just installing Eclipse Neon and it works. Thanks for your assistance, much appreciated. – samgak Aug 29 '16 at 11:33

Well I recommend you to install Oracle JDK 8 64 bit and download Eclipse 4.2 64 bit tar file from official website and extract it and double click on the eclipse executable file.
